U.N. force alleges Israeli activity on Syrian frontline violated ceasefire
Damascus accuses Israel of backing rebel groups
Israel hasn't commented on the claims
A U.N. peacekeeping force monitoring the ceasefire between Israel and Syria in the Golan Heights says Israel has committed "severe violations" of the agreement.
The U.N. Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) said the violations occurred in the vicinity of the village of Bir Ajam on the Syrian side of the armistice line on July 25.
UNDOF said the Syrian Arab Army informed them the next day that Israeli forces had entered the area.
The U.N. force said its observers verified the presence of Israeli bulldozers and armored personnel carriers, as well as the sound of explosions.
The statement said the contingent commander met with the Israeli Defense Forces the next day and demanded an explanation.
The commander received an assurance from Israeli authorities that the area where the incident occurred was under their control and that they would not return.
UNDOF said it is investigating the incident, including the possibility that Israeli forces may have crossed the ceasefire line.
The Syrian government has accused Israel of supporting rebel groups operating in the Golan Heights.
Israel has not commented on the U.N.'s allegations.
