"Captain" Son Heung-min wants to go beyond the record of senior national team coach Hwang Sun-hong
Son Heung-min's dream of becoming South Korea's all-time goalscorer
Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min has set his sights on becoming South Korea's all-time goalscorer, surpassing the record currently held by senior national team coach and former striker Hwang Sun-hong.
Son, who has scored 35 goals in 104 appearances for his country, is just five goals behind Hwang's tally of 40. The 29-year-old is in impressive form for Spurs this season, scoring 12 goals in all competitions, and he will be hoping to add to his international tally when South Korea face Lebanon in a World Cup qualifier on November 14.
Son's impressive goal-scoring record
Son has been in prolific form for both club and country in recent years. He has scored over 20 goals in each of the past five seasons for Tottenham, and he has also been a key player for South Korea, scoring in each of the last three major tournaments (the 2018 World Cup, the 2019 Asian Cup, and the 2021 Copa America).
Son's goal-scoring prowess is not limited to the international stage. He is also Tottenham's all-time top scorer in the Champions League, with 23 goals, and he is the club's joint-top scorer in the Premier League, alongside Harry Kane, with 94 goals.
Son's chances of breaking the record
Son is still only 29 years old, so he has plenty of time to break Hwang's record. He is also in the form of his life, so there is no reason why he cannot continue to score goals for both club and country.
If Son can maintain his current form, he could break Hwang's record within the next two years. This would be a major achievement for Son, and it would cement his status as one of the greatest South Korean players of all time.
