A team of Mississippi State University students has shattered the world record for the highest altitude reached by a student-built rocket, sending their creation to an incredible 150,269 feet above the ground.
The rocket, named "Hail State 1," was launched from the Nasa Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia on May 7th, 2023. It took off at 8:30 AM EST and reached its peak altitude at 8:46 AM EST.
The rocket was powered by a solid-propellant motor. It reached a top speed of 1,875 mph, or Mach 2.5.
The students designed and built the rocket themselves, as part of their senior design project. They spent two years working on the project, and their hard work paid off.
"This is an incredible achievement for our students," said Dr. John Keith, the faculty advisor for the project. "They have shown what is possible when you have a dream and you're willing to work hard." The students' rocket broke the previous altitude record, which was set in 2018 by a team of students from the University of California, Berkeley. That rocket reached an altitude of 145,000 feet. The Mississippi State University students' achievement is a major milestone in the field of rocketry. It shows that students are capable of designing and building rockets that can reach incredible altitudes. The students' rocket is also a testament to the power of education. The students learned a great deal about rocketry and engineering while working on this project. They also gained valuable experience in teamwork and leadership. The students' achievement is an inspiration to other students who are interested in pursuing a career in rocketry or engineering. It shows that anything is possible if you have a dream and you're willing to work hard
