Roberts Accepts Head Coach Position with WNBA’s L.A. Sparks; Petersen Named New Utes Head Coach
Breaking News: Former Utah Head Coach Lynne Roberts Departs for WNBA
In a surprising turn of events, the University of Utah has announced that Head Women's Basketball Coach Lynne Roberts has accepted the head coaching position with the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA. Roberts, who has led the Utes to three NCAA Tournament appearances in her five seasons at the helm, will take over for Derek Fisher, who was fired after the Sparks missed the playoffs in 2022.
Petersen Tapped to Replace Roberts at Utah
With Roberts' departure, the Utes have named assistant coach and former Utah player Amy Petersen as their new head coach. Petersen, who has been on Roberts' staff for the past three seasons, is a highly respected figure in the Utah women's basketball community. She played for the Utes from 2005 to 2009 and was a member of the team's 2008 Final Four squad.
Roberts' Legacy at Utah
Roberts leaves Utah with a 105-63 overall record and a 48-48 mark in Pac-12 play. Under her leadership, the Utes made three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 berth in 2019. She also coached several All-Pac-12 selections, including current WNBA players Kim Angelucci and Dre'Una Edwards.
Petersen's Vision for the Utes
Petersen inherits a Utah program that is coming off a 19-12 season and an appearance in the WNIT. She says her goal is to build on the foundation that Roberts has laid and return the Utes to the NCAA Tournament on a consistent basis.
"I am honored and humbled to be the next head coach at the University of Utah," Petersen said. "This program has a rich tradition, and I am excited to lead it into the future. We have a talented group of players returning, and I am confident that we can compete for championships."
Roberts' Excitement for the Sparks
Roberts, meanwhile, is excited about the opportunity to coach in the WNBA. She says she has always dreamed of coaching at the professional level, and she is eager to get started with the Sparks.
"I am thrilled to join the Los Angeles Sparks organization," Roberts said. "The Sparks are one of the most successful franchises in the WNBA, and I am excited to be a part of their tradition. I believe that we have the pieces in place to compete for a championship, and I can't wait to get to work."
