El Tri Overcome 2-0 Deficit To Seal Spot In Semifinals

Mexico came from behind to defeat Honduras 3-2 and secure their place in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Nations League. El Tri trailed 2-0 at halftime but goals from Hirving Lozano, Diego Lainez and Raul Jimenez saw them overturn the deficit and book their spot in the final four.

Mexico made a bright start to the game and had the better of the early chances. However, it was Honduras who took the lead against the run of play in the 19th minute when Alberth Elis fired home from close range. The Central Americans doubled their advantage just 10 minutes later when Edwin Rodriguez converted a penalty.

Mexico were stunned by the setback but they refused to give up. They pulled a goal back just before halftime when Lozano slotted home from close range. El Tri continued to press after the break and they were rewarded when Lainez equalised in the 64th minute. Jimenez completed the comeback in the 78th minute when he headed home from a corner.

The victory means Mexico will now face Canada in the semifinals of the Nations League. The two teams will meet in Mexico City on June 3.
