After the Lakers' season-opening victory over the Warriors, coach JJ Redick heaped praise on rookie Max Christie for his impressive performance on both ends of the court.
"Max played great tonight," Redick said. "He was a force on defense, and he knocked down some big shots for us."
Christie, who was selected with the 35th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, started at shooting guard and finished with 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. He also played a key role in guarding Warriors star Stephen Curry, holding him to just 20 points on 7-of-28 shooting.
"He's got a great defensive IQ," Redick said. "He's always in the right spot, and he makes it tough for his opponents to get open looks."
Christie's shooting also impressed Redick, as he hit 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.
"He's a natural shooter," Redick said. "He's got a quick release and a smooth stroke. I think he's going to be a great shooter in this league."
With 5-time NBA All-Star Anthony Davis sidelined due to a foot injury, Christie will likely continue to play a significant role for the Lakers this season.
"I'm confident in Max," Redick said. "He's a hard worker, and he's always willing to learn. I think he's going to have a great career."
The Lakers will be back in action on Sunday when they host the Clippers.
