With Jeanie Buss Disinterested, Sam Presti Urged to Sign 2 Ex-Lakers Stars to Fill Chet Holmgren’s Void
Sam Presti urged to sign Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony
With Chet Holmgren likely to miss the entire season, the Oklahoma City Thunder find themselves in yet another rebuilding year. While they could look for answers in the draft, there are a pair of former Los Angeles Lakers who could be free agent targets for Sam Presti.
Russell Westbrook brings leadership and experience
Russell Westbrook is a nine-time All-Star. He has also won a scoring title and an MVP award. Westbrook is a triple-double machine. He also brings toughness and leadership to any locker room.
Westbrook may not be the player he once was but he can still be a valuable contributor. He may even be willing to sign a minimum deal just to get a ring before his career is over.
Carmelo Anthony adds another scoring option
Carmelo Anthony is a 10-time All-Star. He also led the NBA in scoring in 2013. Anthony is a pure scorer. He can create his own shot. He can also hit tough shots late in games.
Anthony may not be the defender he once was but he can still be a valuable contributor. He would also give Presti another veteran to help lead the young players.
Conclusion
There are obvious risks in signing Westbrook and Anthony. Both players are well past their prime. They may not be the same players they once were. However, both players can still be helpful role players on a contending team. They also can mentor the younger players. If the Thunder are willing to take a chance, they could sign both players for the veteran's minimum. This would give them two experienced players who can help them compete for a playoff spot.
