Ukraine War: Russia Accuses Ukraine of Shelling Nuclear Plant, Ukraine Denies
Russia's Defense Ministry accused Ukraine of shelling the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on Saturday, while Ukraine denied the accusation and blamed Russia for the attack.
The plant, Europe's largest, has been under Russian control since the early days of the war. If damaged by shelling, it could cause a catastrophic nuclear disaster.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that Ukrainian forces fired 20 artillery shells at the plant, damaging a high-voltage power line and a transformer.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry denied the accusation, saying that it was "another provocation by the Russian occupiers." The ministry said that the attack was carried out by Russian forces from the Russian-occupied town of Enerhodar.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that it was "deeply concerned" about the shelling of the plant and called for an immediate end to the attacks.
The IAEA said that the plant's six reactors are shut down, but that the plant still needs electricity to cool the reactors and prevent a meltdown.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is located in southeastern Ukraine, near the city of Zaporizhzhia. The plant provides about 20% of Ukraine's electricity.
If the plant were to be damaged by shelling, it could cause a catastrophic nuclear disaster. The Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, which occurred in Ukraine, is still considered the worst nuclear disaster in history.
The war in Ukraine has raised concerns about the safety of the country's nuclear power plants. In addition to the Zaporizhzhia plant, Ukraine has three other nuclear power plants.
The IAEA has called for a cease-fire around the Zaporizhzhia plant to allow for repairs and inspections.
