UAE football team qualifies for FIFA World Cup
Qatar 2022: Hosts lose to Oman as UAE qualify for the World Cup
The United Arab Emirates secured their place in the upcoming FIFA World Cup after beating South Korea 1-0 on Tuesday.
Ali Mabkhout scored the only goal of the game in the first half, giving the UAE its first World Cup qualification since 1990.
The UAE finished third in Group A behind Iran and South Korea, but they secured an automatic qualification spot as one of the four best third-placed teams.
Qatar, the host nation, finished fourth in Group A after losing 2-1 to Oman on Tuesday.
Almoez Ali gave Qatar the lead in the second half, but Oman came back to win the game with goals from Issam Al-Sabhi and Khalid Al-Hajri.
The defeat means that Qatar will not qualify for the World Cup as one of the top two teams in their group.
They will now have to go through the intercontinental play-offs in June 2022 for a chance to qualify for the tournament.
