Pelicans recall Karlo Matković from the Birmingham Squadron
What happened?
The New Orleans Pelicans have recalled center Karlo Matković from the Birmingham Squadron, their NBA G League affiliate, the team announced Monday.
Why is this important?
Matković, 22, has been a key contributor for the Squadron this season, averaging 12.8 points and 6.1 rebounds in 18 games. He has also shown flashes of his potential on the defensive end, averaging 1.6 blocks per game.
The Pelicans are currently dealing with injuries to several of their big men, including Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and Jaxson Hayes. Matković's recall gives the team some much-needed depth in the frontcourt.
What's next?
Matković is expected to join the Pelicans in time for their game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night. It is unclear how much playing time he will receive, but he could be in line for a significant role if the Pelicans continue to struggle with injuries.
