Pelicans' Karlo Matkovic Recalled to NBA
Matkovic Recalled to Pelicans After Impressive G-League Performance
New Orleans Pelicans center Karlo Matkovic has been recalled from the Birmingham Squadron of the NBA G League, the team announced Tuesday. Matkovic was assigned to the Squadron on Dec. 26 and has averaged 16.6 points and 9.8 rebounds in six games with the team.
The 22-year-old Matkovic has appeared in 12 games for the Pelicans this season, averaging 4.5 points and 3.6 rebounds. He was originally drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks with the 52nd overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft and was traded to the Pelicans on draft night.
Matkovic's Recall Provides Depth for Pelicans
Matkovic's recall provides the Pelicans with some much-needed depth in the frontcourt. The team has been without starting center Zion Williamson since Jan. 2 and backup center Willy Hernangomez has also been dealing with injuries.
Matkovic's size and athleticism make him a potential contributor on both ends of the floor. He is a solid rebounder and shot-blocker, and he can also score in the post and from mid-range.
Matkovic's Future with Pelicans
It remains to be seen how much playing time Matkovic will receive with the Pelicans. Williamson is expected to return to action soon, and Hernangomez is also nearing a return from injury.
However, Matkovic's strong play in the G League has shown that he is capable of contributing at the NBA level. He could be a valuable piece for the Pelicans down the stretch as they push for a playoff berth.
