Depth proving to be key factor for Notre Dame's early success

After starting the season with a pair of frustrating losses, the Notre Dame men's basketball team has righted the ship with two straight wins, including a hard-fought 72-65 victory at Georgetown on Tuesday night.

The Irish were led by a balanced scoring attack, with six players scoring at least eight points. Freshman guard J.J. Starling led the way with 16 points, while Dane Goodwin and Nate Laszewski each added 15.

But it was the play of Notre Dame's bench that proved to be the difference. The Irish reserves outscored Georgetown's bench 24-12, and they provided a much-needed spark when the starters were struggling.

"Our bench was huge tonight," said Notre Dame coach Mike Brey. "They gave us a big lift when we needed it."

Notre Dame's depth was especially evident in the second half, when the Irish were able to wear down a tired Georgetown team. The Irish outscored the Hoyas 36-28 in the second half, and they held Georgetown to just 33.3% shooting from the field.

The win is a big one for Notre Dame, as it gives them their first conference road win of the season. It also gives them a much-needed boost of confidence heading into a tough stretch of games.

"This was a great win for us," said Brey. "We showed a lot of heart and toughness, and we got a big contribution from our bench. I'm really proud of our guys."

With their newfound depth, the Irish are now a legitimate threat to make a run in the ACC this season.
