No easy fix for underachieving, struggling Bruins
Historic woes continue to follow Bruins, who drop to 1-3 after loss to Hurricanes
NHL's longest-tenured coach Bruce Cassidy says his team will need to re-focus heading into tough stretch
The Boston Bruins continued their disappointing start to the 2022-23 NHL season with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night, dropping their record to 1-3.
The Bruins have now lost three straight games after winning their season opener against the Washington Capitals. They have been outscored 12-7 in those three losses.
Saturday’s loss was particularly disappointing, as the Bruins had a 2-1 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the third period. But the Hurricanes tied the game with just 2:22 left on the clock, and then won it in overtime.
The Bruins have a number of problems that they need to address if they want to turn their season around. They are struggling to score goals, and they are not getting enough production from their top players.
The Bruins’ power play is 0-for-14 this season, and they have only scored two goals at even strength. Their top line of Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron, and David Pastrnak has not been able to find the back of the net.
The Bruins are also struggling defensively. They have allowed at least three goals in each of their three losses, and they have been giving up too many high-quality scoring chances.
Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said after Saturday’s loss that his team needs to “re-focus” heading into a tough stretch of games.
“We have a lot of work to do,” Cassidy said. “We need to find a way to score more goals, and we need to be better defensively. We’re not getting the job done right now.”
The Bruins will have a chance to turn things around when they host the Vancouver Canucks on Monday night.
