What happened
Kentucky football opened its 2023 season with a dominant 56-10 victory over Lipscomb on Saturday at Kroger Field.
The Wildcats scored touchdowns on their first six possessions. Will Levis threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for another, and Chris Rodriguez rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown.
Lipscomb's only points came on a field goal in the second quarter.
Three takeaways from Kentucky’s win
1. The new offense has plenty of potential
Kentucky's offense looked much different under new offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello. The Wildcats used a lot of tempo and spread the ball around to a number of different receivers.
Quarterback Will Levis was efficient, completing 12 of 22 passes for 192 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Running back Chris Rodriguez was also impressive, rushing for 106 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.
2. The defense is still a work in progress
Kentucky's defense gave up a few big plays to Lipscomb's offense. The Bisons had a few long pass plays and a few long runs.
However, the defense also came up with some big plays of its own. Jordan Wright had an interception and returned it for a touchdown.
Overall, the defense played well enough to get the win, but there are still some areas that need to be improved.
3. Kentucky is a legitimate contender in the SEC East
With the win over Lipscomb, Kentucky has now won 7 of its last 8 games. The Wildcats are looking like a legitimate contender in the SEC East this season.
Will Levis is one of the best quarterbacks in the conference, and Chris Rodriguez is one of the best running backs.
If the defense can continue to improve, Kentucky could be a dark horse to win the SEC East.
