'I felt the shockwave': Neighbors react to deadly house explosion in Bethel
Neighbors are still reeling from the deadly house explosion that rocked the community of Bethel on Tuesday, killing one person and injuring two others. Many neighbors are just now getting to sleep after what they described as a terrifying night.
Those who live nearby described hearing a loud boom that shook their homes and sent them running for cover. Some said they felt the shockwave from the blast.
"I felt the shockwave," said one neighbor, who asked not to be identified. "It was like a bomb had gone off."
The explosion happened around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home on the 200 block of Cherry Street. The house was completely destroyed, and debris was scattered across the neighborhood.
Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene and found one person dead inside the home. Two other people were injured and taken to the hospital, but their conditions are not known.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but officials said it appears to have been caused by a gas leak.
Neighbors said they are still trying to process what happened.
"It's just so sad," said one neighbor. "I can't believe someone died."
Another neighbor said she is grateful that her family was not home at the time of the explosion.
"We were just lucky," she said. "We could have been killed."
