Honduras handed stadium closure, fine after Mexico coach hit by beer can
FIFA has handed Honduras a one-match stadium closure and a $50,000 fine after Mexico coach Javier Aguirre was hit by a full beer can during a CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final.
The incident occurred in the 68th minute of the match between Honduras and Mexico in San Pedro Sula on June 18. Aguirre was struck by the can as he walked towards the touchline to make a substitution.The Honduras Football Federation (FENAFUTH) has since apologized for the incident and has vowed to take action to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
In a statement, FENAFUTH said: "We regret the incident that occurred during the match between Honduras and Mexico. We apologize to Coach Aguirre and the Mexican Football Federation for this unfortunate event."
"We are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all participants in our matches. We will take all necessary steps to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future."
The stadium closure will be in effect for Honduras' next home match in the CONCACAF Nations League, which is scheduled to be played against Canada on September 27.
The fine of $50,000 will be paid to FIFA.
Aguirre was not seriously injured in the incident, but he was left with a cut on his head.
Mexico went on to win the match 3-0.
