Hired! Jim Montgomery tabbed as Head Coach of Boston Bruins
Jim Montgomery Returns to Bench as Boston Bruins New Head Coach
Jim Montgomery is getting back behind an NHL bench. The former Dallas Stars head coach has been hired to lead the Boston Bruins, the team announced Tuesday.
Montgomery has been out of the NHL since he was fired by the Stars in December 2019. He went 86-62-18 in two seasons with Dallas, leading the team to the playoffs both years.
Montgomery Takes Over for Bruce Cassidy
Montgomery replaces Bruce Cassidy, who was fired by the Bruins on June 6 after six seasons. Cassidy led the Bruins to the playoffs in each of his six seasons, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.
However, the Bruins missed the playoffs this past season, finishing with a 51-26-5 record. Montgomery will be tasked with getting the Bruins back into contention in the tough Atlantic Division.
Montgomery's Coaching Style
Montgomery is known for his up-tempo, offensive style of play. He likes his teams to play fast and create scoring chances. He is also known for being a good communicator and motivator.
Montgomery will have a talented roster to work with in Boston. The Bruins have a number of young stars, including David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, and Patrice Bergeron. They also have a strong goaltender in Linus Ullmark.
Montgomery's Goals for the Bruins
Montgomery's goal is to get the Bruins back to the playoffs and competing for a Stanley Cup. He believes that the Bruins have the talent to be a contender and he is excited to get started.
Montgomery said in a statement, "I am honored and excited to be the head coach of the Boston Bruins. This is a storied franchise with a rich history and I am looking forward to leading this team back to the playoffs and competing for a Stanley Cup.
