Federer pays tribute to Nadal ahead of Spaniard’s retirement: ‘You beat me – a lot’
Roger Federer has paid tribute to Rafael Nadal ahead of the Spaniard’s retirement, saying that he was “the greatest rival” he has ever had.
In a heartfelt message posted on social media, Federer said that Nadal had “pushed him to be a better player” and that he was “honored” to have shared the court with him.
“Rafa, I wish you all the best in your retirement,” Federer wrote. “You have been a great champion and an inspiration to many. I will miss our battles on the court, but I know that you will continue to achieve great things off the court.”
Nadal announced his retirement from tennis last week, saying that he could no longer compete at the highest level due to a chronic foot injury.
The Spaniard has won 22 Grand Slam titles, more than any other male player in history. He has also won 36 Masters 1000 titles and 85 ATP Tour titles.
Federer and Nadal have faced each other 40 times in their careers, with Nadal winning 24 of those matches. The two players have developed a close friendship over the years, and Federer has often said that Nadal is one of the greatest players of all time.
In his tribute, Federer said that Nadal had “always been a tough opponent” but that he had also been “a great friend” off the court.
“I have always admired your fighting spirit and your determination to never give up,” Federer wrote. “You have been an inspiration to me and to many others. Thank you for everything, Rafa.”
Nadal is set to retire after the Laver Cup, which will be held in London from September 23-25.
