Boise State jumps into first-round bye spot in latest College Football Playoff rankings
Boise State controls its destiny after moving up to No. 5 in Playoff rankings
Boise State football is in a great position to make the College Football Playoff after Tuesday night's release of the latest rankings. The Broncos moved up one spot to No. 5 in the rankings and are now in control of their own destiny for a New Year's Six bowl game.
Boise State is 9-1 on the season and 6-0 in Mountain West Conference play. The Broncos have two regular-season games remaining, at Wyoming on Saturday and home against Utah State on Nov. 27.
If Boise State wins out, it will finish the season with a 12-1 record. That would likely be enough to earn the Broncos a spot in the New Year's Six, which includes the College Football Playoff semifinals.
The Broncos are currently ranked ahead of No. 6 Alabama, No. 7 LSU and No. 8 Texas A&M in the Playoff rankings.
It is important to note that the Playoff rankings are not the final word on who will make the four-team playoff. The College Football Playoff Selection Committee will release its final rankings on Dec. 5.
Broncos have a favorable schedule down the stretch
Boise State has a favorable schedule down the stretch with two games remaining against teams with a combined record of 10-11.
The Broncos are 10-point favorites over Wyoming and 20-point favorites over Utah State, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.
If Boise State wins out, it will finish the regular season with a perfect record against the Mountain West Conference. The Broncos have already beaten Fresno State, San Diego State and Nevada, who are all bowl eligible.
Boise State's path to the New Year's Six
Boise State has a clear path to the New Year's Six if it wins out. The Broncos would likely be ranked in the top four of the final Playoff rankings and would earn a spot in the semifinals.
If Boise State loses either of its remaining games, it would likely drop out of the top four and would not make the Playoff.
The Broncos would still be in contention for a New Year's Six bowl game, but they would likely need to win the Mountain West Conference championship game to earn a berth.
