After stint with Birmingham Squadron, Karlo Matković recalled to New Orleans Pelicans
Pelicans add depth to frontcourt with Matković's return
The New Orleans Pelicans have recalled center Karlo Matković from the Birmingham Squadron of the NBA G League, the team announced Wednesday.
Matković, 23, was assigned to the Squadron on Jan. 17 and averaged 14.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.8 blocks in eight games (all starts).
The 7-foot, 240-pound center signed a two-way contract with the Pelicans in July 2022 after going undrafted out of the University of San Diego.
Matković provides frontcourt depth for Pelicans
Matković's recall gives the Pelicans some much-needed depth in the frontcourt, especially with Zion Williamson (hamstring) and Brandon Ingram (toe) both currently sidelined.
Matković is a skilled big man who can score in the post, rebound and defend at a high level.
He will likely see some minutes behind Jonas Valančiūnas and Larry Nance Jr. in the Pelicans' rotation.
Pelicans face tough test against Grizzlies
The Pelicans (26-25) will host the Memphis Grizzlies (31-18) on Wednesday night at the Smoothie King Center.
The Grizzlies are one of the hottest teams in the NBA, having won six of their last seven games.
The Pelicans will need to be at their best to beat the Grizzlies, who are led by Ja Morant, Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr.
